ERTMS

ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) is a European standard for train signalling and train control. ERTMS is comprised of two basic components, the European Train Control System (ETCS) and a communication system. The train based ETCS controls the speed of the train based on information it gets via the communication system. GSM-R is used for this communication.

With ERTMS it is no longer necessary to use trackside signals that are read by the train driver. ERTMS provides the possibility to send information which is optimized for each specific train. This offers a significant enhancement of the capacity and performance of the rail infrastructure.
