Link adaptation is a term used in radio communications. Link adaptation is the ability to adapt the modulation scheme and the coding rate of the error correction according to the quality of the radio link.
If the conditions of the radio link are good, a high-level efficient modulation scheme and a small amount of error correction is used. This gives a high data througput on the radio channel. If the conditions of the radio channel are poor, a low-level, more robust, modulation scheme is used and the amount of error correction is increased. The data througput will drop considerably.
