WiMAX |
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access is the popular term for wireless technology that provides broadband connections over long distances. WiMAX can be used for a number of applications of which Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) gets the most attention. However, WiMax can also be used e.g. to connect base stations in a mobile network to the network itself or to connect a wireless LAN hotspot to the Internet (backhaul).
WiMAX is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard. The WiMAX forum has issued a set of specifications to guarantee compatibility and interoperability between equipment of different manufacturers. Only equipment that complies to these specificatations may use the name WiMAX.
